We offer the full range of state-of-the-art diagnostic services, including intracoronary ultrasound, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiologic studies, cardiac MRI, PET, SPECT and MUGA scans.

Therapeutic Excellence

Heart Surgery
We are a world leader in surgery for coronary artery disease, valve repair and replacement, and heart and heart/lung transplant. We have already performed more heart transplants than any other hospital over the last two decades. Our physicians are in the vanguard of development of new treatment modalities, such as the latest surgical treatments for arrhythmias, aortic aneurysm, and robotically-assisted surgery. In fact, the first completely robotically coronary bypass surgery in the United States was performed at NewYork-Presbyterian. In addition, NewYork-Presbyterian pioneered the use of the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) for those patients awaiting heart transplant and as a long-term treatment for heart failure.

Interventional Cardiology
As part of our individualized, comprehensive approach to patient care, we recognize that invasive surgical procedures may not be the best treatment option for your heart condition. Interventional cardiologists in the Division of Cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and in the Cardiovascular Interventional Therapy Program offer a full range of cutting edge non-surgical treatment options such as, carotid artery stenting, coronary artery stenting with state-of-the-art drug eluting stents, ablative treatment of arrhythmias, carotid, renal, and peripheral vascular angioplasty, balloon valvuloplasty for mitral and aortic heart valve disease, transmyocardial revascularization – first tested at our facility, endovascular treatment of atherosclerosis, alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, and minimally invasive treatment for atrial septal defects.

Cutting-Edge Research

By virtue of its affiliation with Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Medical College of Cornell University — two world-class medical colleges — NewYork-Presbyterian is staffed with some of the greatest minds in clinical care and research. We continue to make ground-breaking advancements in basic research that translate into new therapies and treatments in areas including:
  • New surgical and other minimally-invasive approaches to the treatment of cardiac arrythmias.
  • Development of the next generation of stents for the treatment of atherosclerosis.
  • Assessment of the next generation of LVADs for use as a bridge to heart transplatation as well as for long-term use in the treatment of heart failure.
  • Innovative minimally-invasive approaches to the treatment of carotid artery disease, inflammation, and heart failure.
  • Development of new heart valve therapies.
  • Development of new "filters" that help to trap plaque particles to prevent them from causing stroke and other complications.
  • Potential uses for stem cells in treating heart disease.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

At NewYork-Presbyterian we understand that the importance of prevention and follow-up in the treatment of heart disease. Our Preventive Cardiology Program is a joint program of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center that supports patient care, education, research and community and corporate outreach to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease and to promote heart health.
